When your back pain isn't coming from your back (and other head-scratching pelvic floor updates)

Hi hello Reader, how is October almost gone?!? Wild times.

About a month ago I had the privilege of attending a conference designed for and planned by pelvic health therapists. (It's called PelviCon! Get it!?) I've been to all but one of the 5 consecutive years of this conference. As a therapist who works alone - both in person in my clinic and while seeing my virtual clients - not much recharges my batteries more than getting to participate in a conference filled with people just as passionate about these niches as I am. What a gift to be able to nerd out with fellow providers, meet up with friends & colleagues from around the world (including my friend Julienne from Guam!! What a journey to get to Atlanta from there!), and learn the research updates and best practices for treating pelvises belonging to people of all walks of life...

A (very brief) overview for you of the main topics -

Dr Rachel Rubin:

Could one small prescription help protect women from serious infections? Dr. Rubin shares a huge new study showing vaginal estrogen may cut the risk of sepsis, hospital stays, and death in half. Many doctors still don’t offer it, so read more about it and save or print the studies I list in the blog!

Michelle Lyons:

Pelvic rehab and cancer care
Did you know physical therapy can be a critical tool for your healing and well being during and after cancer treatment? Lyons explains how pelvic rehab can ease pain, build stamina, and help with sexual health changes that are often overlooked by our medical providers... due to lack of time or discomfort in asking the right questions.

Low back pain and the pelvic floor
Could your back pain be related to more than your back? Lyons shares research linking chronic low back pain to things like constipation, hormone changes, sleep, and even the gut microbiome. Find out why treating the whole person may be the missing piece... with the research to back it up!

Taryn Hallam: Birth injury and early postpartum
What if the best thing for early postpartum healing is more rest? Hallam shares research showing that many women’s pelvic floors heal on their own, and how that should change care we provide for new moms.
My pregnancy & postpartum coaching clients: you'll hear so much more about this on our monthly calls!

Paul Hodges: The male pelvic floor
Did you know men have a pelvic floor too? Hodges explains why rehab after prostate surgery may need a fresh approach, and how small changes could help with bladder control and more. Our approach is always evolving alongside the research.

Gráinne Donnelly:

Compression for the pelvic floor
Can compression gear really “lighten the load”? Donnelly shares what the research says about leaking, heaviness, and running, and when compression might help.

Diastasis recti
Diastasis is a very misunderstood diagnosis, and PTs/ movement pros haven't always gotten it right in the past. Having diastasis doesn’t mean avoiding core exercise or living in fear. She breaks down the newest research on how to load the belly safely after pregnancy, and why you should be wary of advice you may have seen online!

Amy Stein: Endometriosis
Why does it take almost 10 years to get diagnosed with endometriosis? Stein breaks down what this condition is, why women’s pain gets brushed aside, and what’s new in treatment. Spoiler alert: it's related to more than you may think!

Katherine Sylvester: Maternal health
Did you know up to 84% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. could be prevented? Sylvester shares why so many moms face serious risks during and after pregnancy, and the monitoring practices that can help catch problems early.

I took several hours to process everything I learned, distill it down into what you need to know, and painstakingly gathered all the research articles, because I know my audience -- and y'all love the science! (Just like me!)

If any of the above feels pertinent to where you are right now, remember you can reply to the email with questions or book a virtual consult with me. And remember, in a world where we can't always trust what our algorithms send us or where our information comes from, there are still many of us who aim to give you the evidence-based information you need to make the best health choices for yourself and your loved ones. Thanks as always for being here and reading my musings.

Oh, and stay tuned for my upcoming blog series on sexual health amidst adversity, including chronic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, post-surgery and more!
